Royal Tokaji, established in 1990, is a winery located in the village of Mád in the Tokaj wine region of Hungary, known for producing exceptional white wines using traditional methods dating back to the 17th century. The winery owns a combination of first and second-growth vineyards, including the renowned Mézes Mály, and primarily uses three grape varieties: Furmint, Hárslevelü, and Muscat de Lunel. Royal Tokaji's state-of-the-art winery, designed by Csaba Bodonyi, accommodates over 1,000 oak barrels for aging and has a stainless-steel tank capacity of 71,325 gallons. The winery produces several styles of wine, including dry, off-dry, and the iconic Tokaji Aszú, which is made by adding aszú berries affected by noble rot to a base wine, resulting in a sweet, rich, and complex wine that is aged for a minimum of three years before release.
The 2018 Royal Tokaji Szt. Tamás Furmint is a powerful and well-structured dry white wine from the esteemed First Growth vineyard overlooking the Royal Tokaji winery in Mád. The vineyard's unique terroir, characterized by rich, red clay soil interspersed with indigo and purple volcanic rocks, contributes to the wine's concentration and elegance. The long, warm summer of 2018 allowed for early ripening and harvesting of the Furmint grapes, which were fermented and aged in Hungarian oak barrels, with 30% new oak, for ten months. The resulting wine showcases a perfect balance between ripe fruit, crisp acidity, and subtle spice notes imparted by the barrel maturation. The Szt. Tamás Furmint is long and intense on the palate, reflecting the unique climate and soil of its origin. This complex and graceful Furmint pairs exceptionally well with Asian cuisine, white meats, fish, and pasta dishes.
