A steep, quickly warmed south-facing slope with grey slate and volcanic rocks. Here we harvest our premium dry and top sweet wines. This is the Nahe location most highly rated by the experts. The wines from Hermannshöhle enjoy global renown!
Picked on November 10 at an outside temperature of 23° Fahrenheit, this is unsurprisingly Eiswein-like in its candied lemon and vanilla icing aspects. But these grapes had also been significantly concentrated by botrytis, and there is an overall impression of peach preserves. The wine boasts a creamy texture, delightful buoyancy and a finish tinged with crushed stone and mouthwatering mineral salts. For all of the failed and flawed 2018s I’ve tasted from grapes exposed to freezing temperatures, here’s one that, amazingly, not only succeeded but excelled!
From perfectly healthy grapes, the 2018 Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Auslese offers a very clear and aromatic bouquet of white peach, candied grapefruits, mandarin and crushed stones. Picked at 102° and 118° Oechsle (in mid-October and around the 10th of November), this is a round and generous, very elegant and balanced Auslese with a piquant finish. The 2018 is a very well made picture-book wine that lacks a bit of mystery at this stage. Tasted in July 2019.
