IDDA is a joint winemaking venture established in 2017 between renowned Italian winemaker Angelo Gaja and the Graci family, a prominent winemaking force on Mount Etna in Sicily. The partnership owns 50 acres of vineyards on the southern slopes of the volcano, ranging from 2,000 to 2,600 feet in elevation across the villages of Belpasso and Biancavilla. This range provides a diversity of altitudes, exposures, and soil types. While a new winery facility in Belpasso is slated to open in 2023, the wines are currently produced at Alberto Graci's Passopisciaro winery on Etna's northern slope. The name "IDDA," meaning "she" in the Sicilian dialect, refers to Mount Etna itself, with the label artwork evoking various aspects of the iconic volcano's landscape and terroir.
The wine presents an intensely concentrated nose with aromas of juniper, graphite, cinchona, and orange, leading to delicate rose notes on the finish. The warm, enveloping bouquet is very spicy and intense. On the palate, flavors of tamarind, carob, and date emerge, creating a creamy and enveloping mouthfeel. The tannins are straight and the body is medium, with a fresh and flowing texture. Overall, the wine offers a complex interplay of concentrated spice, fruit, and floral notes, supported by a structured yet creamy texture.
