Alvaro Palacios, a man on a mission to craft Spain's greatest wine, traversed his homeland in the late 1980s. While ultimately settling on Priorat for his now-famous "L'Ermita" and "Finca Dofi," another region captivated him: Bierzo. Here, ancient Mencia vines clung to steep slopes, whispering of a unique terroir. This grape, believed brought by medieval pilgrims, fueled Alvaro's dream. Years later, his nephew Ricardo, armed with Bordeaux studies and a shared vision, joined him. Together in 1998, they embarked on a quest - to unearth Bierzo's hidden treasures: its finest old-vine Mencía vineyards.
Crafted from 100% Mencia grapes, Corullon embodies the soul of Bierzo. Hand-harvested and meticulously sorted, these organically and biodynamically grown grapes undergo a traditional vinification process. Gentle maceration for 25 days in oak fermenters allows for nuanced extraction, aided by daily punchdowns. Relying solely on spontaneous fermentation, the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, preserving its pure essence. Finally, it rests in seasoned French oak barrels, previously used for Corullon or the prestigious Pétalos cuvée, ensuring subtle oak influence without overpowering the wine's character.
Slightly reductive at first, then it opens up with a hint of roasted sesame that colors the dark raspberries, strawberries and the tangy profile of white pepper, dried herbs and agave. Really long and vertical on the palate, with very tight and dusty tannins that still need at least a year or two to integrate more. Ethereal and lingering finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink from 2024.
