Elegant and refined, the foundation Tiwha instantly captivates with a ripe perfume of red bramble berries, exotic Chinese five spice, and a savoury hint of wild thyme and porcini mushroom.

Delicate, yet well structured tannin is supported by an oak finesse, framing the brambled palate flow with sweet yet savoury notes of roasted hazel nut, almond and dark spices. Evolution from time in the glass is rewarded. Typically some secondary character profiles will evolve after 3-4 years, while retaining fruit vibrancy. With careful cellaring flavours will age gracefully into more tertiary and complex characters, around 8-10 years old.

Enjoy with a wide range of food, however this wine matches exceptionally well with game, mushroom and tru!e dishes. A broad array of spices can be successfully paired to the wine’s flavours – get creative and best of all, enjoy with good company!

Coal Pit Description

Coal Pit is a boutique family vineyard in Central Otago, New Zealand. We are committed to producing world-class wines from our certified organic vineyard and on-site winery.

The Coal Pit name is derived from the historical area in the nearby mountain ranges which provided the early pioneers, musterers and gold miners with coal as they passed over the Coal Pit saddle. The coal was bagged at the pit, loaded into carts and brought down Coal Pit road to the valley.

The vineyard is nestled on the warm north-facing slopes of Gibbston, the highest sub-region in Central Otago.  The vineyard faces north toward the Crown Range Mountains and the Kawarau River. Gibbston and Queenstown attract the extremes of New Zealand weather with snow covered winters and hot summers. The landscape is arguably one of the most detached and volatile grape growing regions in the world but at the same time the extreme seasonality in Gibbston's climate is perfect for producing remarkably high-quality fruit.

True to our signature flavours, this wine has dark cherry aromatics with savoury cocoa undertones, underpinned with delicate notes of dried herbs. Structured tannins extend the length of the palate, signifying great ageability for this wine. An elegant yet powerful Pinot Noir, where depth of fruit and tannin abound, balanced with the delightful acidity that our Coal Pit site is known for.

James Suckling: 92 Points

This has complex aromas of wild cherries, red plums, ash, thyme, grilled rosemary and porcini mushrooms. Some flintiness, too. Silky and full of flavor, with a medium body and very fine tannins. Sleek finish. Drink now. Screw cap.

Vinous: 91 Points

Offering delightful perfume with tickle-your-nose aromas of florals, pine, thyme and black cherries, this is a succulent yet precise expression of Central Otago Pinot Noir. Hailing from the cool subregion of Gibbston, it maintains a sense of elegance and freshness despite achieving full ripeness. The tannins are fine and there's a delicate thread of acidity, drawing this out. A little more length would be very welcome so it could be enjoyed even longer.
