Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, situated in Saint-Julien, Bordeaux, boasts a terroir of exceptional quality. The vineyard's Gunz gravel soils, composed of ancient quartz pebbles, create an ideal environment for vine growth. These "beautiful pebbles" force roots to dig deep for nutrients and regulate temperature, enhancing grape maturation. The estate's proximity to Europe's largest estuary provides a unique microclimate, moderating temperatures and promoting optimal vine respiration. This combination of soil and climate contributes to the production of wines with extraordinary elegance and breed.
Le Petit Ducru de Ducru Beaucaillou introduces wine enthusiasts to the Borie family's signature style. This Saint-Julien blend, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with occasional Petit Verdot, offers a glimpse into the qualities of its esteemed siblings. The wine balances youthful exuberance with complexity, showcasing notes of sun-ripened berries, hints of cedar, and a touch of spice. Its approachable nature makes it an excellent companion for poultry dishes, where its supple tannins complement crispy skin and tender meat. Le Petit Ducru embodies the essence of friendship and casual elegance.
Such a beautiful red with currants, blackberries and some walnut and stone undertones. It’s medium-bodied with a creamy texture and a long finish. Hints of dried citrus. Drinkable now, but better in a year or two.
The 2019 Le Petit Ducru de Ducru-Beaucaillou is plush, creamy and open-knit, all of which give it considerable immediacy, not to mention tons of charm. Succulent dark cherry, plum, mocha and licorice lend nuance in this racy, Merlot-based blend. The Petit Ducru is a new wine meant to be the third selection from the château.
The 2019 Le Petit Ducru De Ducru-Beaucaillou is also Merlot-dominated and includes 36% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. It offers classic Saint-Julien elegance and purity in its darker currant and cherry fruits as well as notes of tobacco, violets, and lead pencil. With medium-bodied richness on the palate, it has wonderful tannins, a balanced, layered mouthfeel, and outstanding length. It needs air to show at its best and is just a charming, elegant, layered 2019 to enjoy over any time over the coming decade.
Notes of blackberries, plums, pencil shavings and violets introduce the 2019 Le Petit Ducru, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and sensual wine that's lively and concentrated, its ample core of fruit largely concealing an abundance of ripe, powdery tannin. It's a Merlot-based blend that includes declassified lots of La Croix and Ducru-Beaucaillou itself. (W. Kelley)
Very deep crimson. Doesn’t look like a second wine! Concentrated and ripe on the nose. And very soft and gentle. Hardly any tannin in evidence til the very end when it does make its presence felt. But very good for a second wine. Pretty snazzy! (JR)
