The story of Montrose, written by three families of owners over two centuries, is a reflection of their spirit, marked by their pursuit of excellence and by legendary vintages. As pioneers in the Médoc, visionary builders and astute managers, they tended and got the best out of its unique terroir. It is they who laid the foundations to which Montrose now owes its image and its unique place in the world of great wines.
The robe is silky with an average intensity and a beautiful cherry red colour. The nose is very expressive and concentrated, slightly sweet and woody, with a mixture of red fruit aromas, raspberry, and morello cherry. The palate is powerful and racy, combining suppleness and tight tannins. Beautiful length in the mouth, with tannins less evident in the after-taste. A Second wine well balanced and accessible.
Blackcurrants with crushed stone and slate. Lead pencil. Medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins and precision. Fantastic length and focus. One of the best Dames I have had. Organically grown grapes. 48% merlot, 46% cabernet sauvignon and 3% petit verdot and cabernet franc.
The 2020 La Dame de Montrose is fabulous. Rich, dense and expansive, the 2020 offers notable vibrancy and a good bit of energy too. Bright acids cut through a core of red/purplish fruit in what is an intense, wonderfully saline Dame. The 2020 finishes with remarkable elegance and sophistication.
The second wine of Château Montrose, the 2020 La Dame De Montrose is terrific, with a sunny, forward, medium-bodied style as well as lots of ripe red and black fruits, notes of sweet tobacco, sandalwood, and spice, supple tannins, and outstanding length. Open and complex, it’s going to shine for 15 years if well-stored. The blend is 49% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, and the balance Cabernet Franc, checking in at the same alcohol as the Grand Vin, 13.4%.
Tasted blind. Black core with purplish rim. Smells rich and warmly dark-fruited. Touch of rubbery reduction that should blow off. Big and juicy at the core, the tannins firm and smoothed. Doesn’t have the power of some. (JH)
