Prelius is an organic vineyard in Tuscany's Maremma region, owned and operated by the Stianti Mascheroni family. Located near the Tyrrhenian Sea, the 21-hectare estate sits on hilly terrain that was once an ancient coastal lake. The vineyard benefits from the area's mild climate, sea breezes, and well-draining alluvial soil. Prelius grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Vermentino, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc grapes using organic farming methods certified by the EU.
The Castelprile vineyards, located in the Maremma Toscana DOC region, occupy 2 hectares on a hilltop five miles from the sea, overlooking the Tuscan Archipelago. This area, once an ancient coastal lake called Prelius, now produces excellent wines, with the winery's logo representing the fluid essence of its history. The vineyard, planted between 2001-2004, features sandy soil with clay and silt, at an elevation of 37-52 meters. The 2020 vintage of their 100% Vermentino wine, harvested on August 26 after a warm, dry season, underwent vinification in French oak and presents a bright straw yellow color with aromatic herb and wildflower notes, culminating in a full, harmonious taste with a long, savory finish.
A field of spring flowers wafts off the nose of this Vermentino before warmer, richer notes of lemon curd and almond paste emerge. The palate offers a wider array of citrus, leaning more toward lime and grapefruit now. Slightly bitter notes of raw almond skin contrast with delicate floral notes still detectable on the backpalate.
