The Abacela Story is a testament to scientific curiosity and entrepreneurial spirit in winemaking. Earl and Hilda Jones, scientists with no prior winemaking experience, embarked on a mission to solve the mystery of why quality Tempranillo wine was absent from American viticulture. Inspired by Earl's love for Spanish Rioja wines, the couple conducted extensive research and developed a hypothesis that climate, rather than soil, was the critical factor in producing excellent Tempranillo.

In 1995, the Joneses took a leap of faith, relocating their family 2,700 miles to Oregon's Umpqua Valley, where they believed they had found a Spanish Tempranillo homoclime. They established Abacela winery, named after the Spanish verb meaning "to plant a vine," and set out to test their climate hypothesis. Their dedication and scientific approach not only resulted in the creation of a world-class, award-winning winery but also significantly influenced viticulture practices across America. The Abacela story demonstrates how rigorous scientific inquiry, combined with passion and perseverance, can lead to groundbreaking achievements in winemaking and transform an entire industry.
