Bryan Deleu's journey into winemaking began unexpectedly while working in restaurants to fund his architectural studies. Inspired by his newfound passion, he trained in the Rhône region and New Zealand before launching his own venture in 2019. With mentorship from established winemakers and a focus on premium quality, Deleu began small, producing just 4,500 bottles from two and a half hectares. His vineyards span the Condrieu, Saint Joseph, and Côtes du Rhône appellations, featuring challenging, steep terrain that he has painstakingly cultivated. Deleu's meticulous approach includes hand-harvesting, cold settling, indigenous yeast fermentation, and barrel aging for at least 12 months. Despite his small beginnings, the quality of his wines from the 2020 and 2021 vintages suggests a promising future for this ambitious new winemaker.
This Saint-Joseph wine is crafted from 75-year-old Serine vines (a local Syrah variant) planted at a density of 6,000 vines per hectare on granitic soil. The vineyard, managed using sustainable viticulture practices, is located in a very old plot on the heights of Malleval in the "la madonne" lieu-dit. Grapes are hand-harvested in small 20 kg crates to preserve their quality. The vinification process includes 30% whole cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts, followed by a 30-day maceration in stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation occurs in barrels, and the wine is then aged for 18 months in demi-muids and barrels.
