Three generations of Burgundian tradition are carried on by Aurélien Verdet, the steward of Domaine Aurélien Verdet, whose family has dedicated themselves to grape growing for three generations. Carrying on his father Alain's legacy of pioneering organic viticulture, Aurélien advocates for sustainable practices, which is evident in his wines that steadfastly authentically reflect their terroir. Succulent and elegant, with vibrant fruit expressions, buoyant acidity, and polished tannins, every taste is a tribute to the Côtes de Nuits. Aurélien's wines, which range from village varietals to premier crus, capture the spirit of their place of origin and promise accessibility when young while developing smoothly over time. This wine's grapes are carefully chosen from a highly valued 1.2-acre parcel.
When you open a bottle of Domaine Aurélien Verdet's Nuits-Saint-Georges, get ready for a voyage enveloped in shades of medium red. The scent of game is intriguingly blended with crushed thyme, a hint of spice box, and whispers of green peppercorns in its masculine nose. Savor the sensation of scarlet, acidic fruit dancing on your tongue, complemented with the earthy taste of sour cherries and the deep umami flavor of mushrooms. Medium tannins and acidity create a dry embrace that envelops lingering flavors of forest floor and subtle, elusive truffle overtones. The voyage comes to a smooth conclusion that evokes the splendor of Burgundy.
The 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges Village opens in the glass with scents of cassis, potpourri and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated, with powdery tannins and a long, saline finish. It's another fine effort from Verdet.
A very fresh and distinctly earthy nose is comprised by notes of various dark berries and whiffs of leather and game. The extremely rich, suave and relatively big-bodied flavors exhibit evident power on the rustic, austere and very compact finale. This has the density to successfully evolve but it will need at least a few years first.
Aurélien Verdet now farms 10 ha directly and buys in fruit from the equivalent of another 11 ha for a total of 21 ha. I had a chance to quickly taste through his range of 2019s along with a selection of 2018s with Verdet. He noted that his 2018s were bottled in December 2019.
