It shouldn't be. A wine that tastes like the place it came from needs distinctive rock, a suitable grape, and a grower who stays out of the way. It does not need a famous zip code. Portugal has the first three and almost none of the fourth, which is why we keep going back. This week we pulled four bottles from four regions — granite in the Minho, limestone marl north of Lisbon, granitic clay-sand at 300 meters in the Alentejo, clay-limestone in Bairrada. Named vineyards, specific soils, real decisions in the cellar. All four together run $67.96 plus applicable sales taxes.

QUINTA DA LIXA VINHO VERDE TERRAS DO MINHO BRANCO — $11.99

The QUINTA DA LIXA VINHO VERDE TERRAS DO MINHO BRANCO comes from a family operation that began in 1986 as a cellar-door business in the town of Lixa. The Meireles family now farms 105 hectares across six estates — Lixa, Corredoura, Souto, Nova, Sanguinhedo and Lagareiros — in the hilly Sousa sub-region of the Minho. The bedrock is granite, which drains fast and carries no lime, so soils stay acidic and the grapes keep their bite. Loureiro, Trajadura and Arinto make up the blend. Fruit is picked by hand. The wine shows a faint spritz of residual carbon dioxide — a Vinho Verde convention, not a flaw — over yellow pear, dried apricot and citrus zest. Wine Enthusiast gave the 2023 vintage 87 points. The same family built Monverde, the region's first wine hotel.

MORGADO DE BUCELAS ARINTO 2022 — $15.99

MORGADO DE BUCELAS ARINTO 2022 comes from the smallest serious appellation in the country. Bucelas was demarcated in 1911, sits about 20 kilometers north of Lisbon, and holds roughly 138 hectares of vines. It is Portugal's only DOC that permits white wine and nothing else. The soils are calcareous marl and crystalline limestone the locals call caeiras. Arinto planted on them retains ferocious natural acidity even through a warm coastal summer. This bottling is 100% Arinto. The fruit gets four hours of skin contact before the clean must ferments at 14°C for 25 days. Three months of bâtonnage in stainless steel follow — texture, no oak. The numbers carry the argument: 12.5% alcohol, pH 3.3, 5.6 g/L total acidity. Expect white flowers, lime, green apple, chalk and wet stone, with salt on the close. Boas Quintas, founded in 1991 by Nuno Cancela de Abreu, makes it stand amongst others in the region.

HERDADE DOS COELHEIROS ROSE 2025 — $19.99

The HERDADE DOS COELHEIROS ROSE 2025 is a departure from the vintage before it. This one is very pale and very light — closer in weight and color to a Cinsault rosé from France than to anything the Alentejo usually sends us. Soft, gentle, low-impact, and dry. The vineyard work explains it. Syrah grows at 300 meters on a northwest-facing slope beside the Arraiolos stream, an aspect that keeps the fruit out of the worst afternoon heat. Touriga Nacional comes off clay-sandy ground at the Cabido Vineyard. Coelheiros is a certified organic estate of 800 hectares at Arraiolos, where vines, walnut orchard and cork montado share ground with sheep and deer. Owners Alberto Weisser and Gabriela Mascioli have farmed it on regenerative principles since 2015 with the mind that great wines start in the vineyard first.

CAMPOLARGO VINHA DO PUTTO TINTO 2019 — $19.99

The cellar behind CAMPOLARGO VINHA DO PUTTO TINTO 2019 is cut eighteen meters into a southwest-facing Bairrada hillside. Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Merlot grow on clay-limestone soils, arrive fully de-stemmed, and ferment separately in small vats worked by mechanical treading. Malolactic fermentation and aging both happen in stainless steel rather than barrel, which is why the wine stays ruby and bright. Wild berry and violet on the nose, ripe fruit across the palate, good structure, and acidity that keeps the whole thing lively.
